What Is Narcan?
Narcan (generic name naloxone) is a lifesaving medication that can reverse an opioid overdose while it’s happening in just minutes. Anyone can get it and carry it, whether you use opioids yourself, have friends or family members who do, or think you may encounter someone having an overdose. Make sure to keep it close so you’ll always be ready to save a life.
Stopping the stigma of Narcan.
People may be hesitant to acquire or use Narcan because they think it encourages people to continue using drugs. This is a flawed way of thinking for two reasons:
People have to be alive to seek recovery.
People who overdose don’t deserve to die. Addiction is a brain disease that needs treatment. In order for someone to get better, they have to seek recovery. Narcan gives them that chance.Addiction is a brain disease.
Until you’ve struggled with addiction yourself, it’s difficult to understand the way the brain works and changes what you do. Carrying Narcan demonstrates empathy and willingness to help someone who suffers from a disease.
Where can I get Narcan?
Narcan is free by mail and can be purchased without a prescription at participating pharmacies throughout Delaware. It is also available at statewide distribution and training events, and through certain clinics.
A quick, 5-minute training is required to get Narcan.
How to use Narcan.
Please make sure to follow the instructions included with Narcan. But here’s a quick way to remember the steps.
1. Peel
Peel back the package to remove the device. Hold the device with your thumb on the bottom of the plunger and two fingers on the nozzle.
2. Place
Place and hold the tip of the nozzle in either nostril until your fingers touch the bottom of the patient’s nose.
3. Press
Press the plunger firmly to release the dose into the patient’s nose.
